Welcome to Tallguide ®
Ultra low transmission loss Tallguide (TALLGUIDE ®) is a unique form of precision rectangular rigid waveguide that exhibits one tenth (1/10) the transmission line loss of standard WR type waveguide. For high power systems, Tallguide carries 5 times more power than ordinary waveguide. Tallguide's virtual loss free transmission mode appeals to multi-mode waveguide technology where as many as 15 or more higher order modes may propagate. Tallguide has all necessary bends, twists and straight sections that are essential to lay out any waveguide run. A Tallguide run consists of transition units from standard waveguide into and out of Tallguide, H-plane bends, twists, straight sections and mode suppressor in-between. Tallguide enables the interfacility waveguide run distance, between the control room and transmitting antenna, to be specified for convenience. Tallguide is easy to install. Like waveguide, no special tools or alignments are necessary. Frequency range is 5 to 110 GHz.Typical applications are satellite earth station uplinks and radar. Since many radar installations involve a common waveguide for both a transmit and a receive path, the Tallguide power savings are doubled when considering the overall system. For satellite communications applications, Tallguide increases uplink power, --- enabling the use of smaller antennas, higher effective radiative transmit power or uplink power control. As such, Tallguide significantly reduces satcom earth station cost. And for high power applications, Tallguide may be used in place of water-cooled or air-fin cooled waveguide runs. Tallguide is available for all waveguide and satcom frequencies: C-band, X-band, Ku-band, DBS, Ka-band, MET and MILSTAR. For further satellite communications data, see How to Combat Uplink Power Loss reprinted from the January 1995 issue of Satellite Communications. Specific Tallguide component information for common Tallguide frequency bands may be found in the data sheet Tallguide Ultra Low Loss Waveguide.
In December 1994, Antennas for Communications adopted size and frequency band definitions for Tallguide that correspond to standard WR waveguide frequency band designations. For example, TG115 matches the WR75 frequency band. TG87 matches the WR62 frequency band. Under the Tallguide TGxxx standard, the "xxx" symbol with x.xx inch units, corresponds to 1/2 the cut-off wavelength of the dominate Tallguide propagating mode. The Tallguide x.xx dimension further corresponds to the distance between the Tallguide narrow walls. This TGxxx standard is similar to the WRxxx waveguide standard, where x.xx refers to the broad wall width, with inch units, and also refers to 1/2 the cut-off wavelength of the dominate waveguide mode.
